Kyle Makes History

Junior Young Farmer of the Year

Kyle Scott of Crossroads YFC is the first ever SAYFC Junior Young Farmer of the Year (supported by SRUC, Scotland’s Rural College). The 14-year-old was awarded the title at the Royal Highland Show after impressing judges with his well-presented Farm Plan and his essay entitled β€˜If You Do a Job You Love…”, in which he talked about his dream of becoming a vet and his plans to achieve this.

Kyle was over the moon with his big win:

β€œI couldn’t believe I had won when I first saw the results and it still hasn’t really sunk in yet. To be the first ever winner is really special. I’m definitely going to get involved in more Young Farmers Competitions in the future and maybe even take a crack at the senior Young Farmer of the Year comp in a few years’ time.”

This new competition, open to members between 14 and 18 years old, was designed in partnership with SRUC to engage with Junior Members, recognise their effort and achievements and get them to start thinking about and planning for their future. Speaking on behalf of SRUC, Marketing and Student Recruitment Lead, Anouska Curzon praised the competitors for their hard work and the high standard of entries:

β€œSRUC were proud to support the SAYFC Junior Young Farmer of the Year competition. Our goal was to inspire contestants to look ahead and explore diverse career paths, encouraging innovation and sustainability for the future of farming. The exceptional quality of the entries showcases the remarkable talent and promise of the next generation in agriculture”.

For the competition, each entrant was asked to produce a digital poster based on a provided farm plan, highlighting how the farm might look in 10 years’ time. They were also asked to produce an essay about their dream future career and detail how their chosen SRUC subject could help them achieve these goals.

As Anouska stated there was an excellent standard of competition in this first year. Each entrant took their own unique approach to the tasks, and it was brilliant to see their individuality shine through their entries. The contestants highlighted the fantastic array of careers available across the sector with their entries encompassing veterinary sciences, business management, animal husbandry, feed nutrition and more. And their farm plans encompassed the kind of innovation and sustainable thinking that will hopefully see this generation take the industry to new heights in the future.

SAYFC would like to thank SRUC for their support in bringing this competition together and for contributing towards this year’s prize of an Β£150 Amazon Voucher and a free trip on SAYFC’s Junior Jaunt. Well done to all our prize winners and thanks to all our competitors for their great contributions.
