Kilmaurs Make it Three in a Row

Kilmaurs Make it Three in a Row

Our members once again produced a fantastic array of Arts & Crafts this year for the National competitions at the Royal Highland Show Sponsored by Dairyflow. Filling the Young Farmers Centre with amazing displays, brilliantly inventive makes and delicious confectionary.

Senior Arts & Crafts: Scottish Inventions

This year’s Senior competition celebrated Scotland’s rich heritage of invention and inventors. Our competing teams took this prompt and ran with it, crafting displays that celebrated everything from the steam engine to the humble postage stamp. After an afternoon of tough deliberations it was the team from Kimaurs YFC who took home their third red certificate in as many years.

Winning team member Karen Shepherd had this to say about their achievement:

“It is an incredible feeling winning handicrafts this year once again. It makes all the stress and hard work that everyone has put into their items worth while. Even though this year the theme was Scottish Inventions which we found more challenging compared to previous themes, it is amazing what your imagination can come up with.”

“Handicrafts is one of my favourite competitions to compete in as over the years it has really tested my creativity and has shown me that I am able to turn my hand at any skill whether it has been quilling, cake decorating or making mince pies. You are able to do it when you put your mind to it.”

The runners up this year were the displays from Peeblesshire in second place and Vale of Alford in third.

Junior Arts & Crafts: The Four Seasons

In the Junior section this year contestants were asked to consider one of the fundamentals of agriculture; weather and the changing seasons, and use it to inspire their pieces. There were some fantastic displays ranging from the bright colours of spring through the warm reds and golds of autumn to colder winter tones. Amongst a brilliant array of entries it was the display from Peeblesshire JAC that gained the highest score. Hannah Hunter was pleased was delighted that the months of hard work had paid off:

When I received the message that we had won I couldn’t believe it! It has always been my dream to win arts and crafts and our hard work and dedication definitely paid off. We spend months making sure our items are perfect and to win 1st place in junior arts and crafts is the most rewarding achievement. I have learnt a lot of new skills through arts and crafts like being able to knit patterns and doing iris folding which are skills I will definitely use in the future.”
