Strichen JAC win the Grampian Rally for a Second Year

A great day was had by all at Fettercairn Show Park, Fettercairn at the 2022 Grampian Rally, hosted by Aberdeen & Kincardine District on Saturday 18th June.

The rally committee welcomed Sixteen clubs from around the Grampian area who competed in the day in many competitions from Stockjudging, Construction, Field Contests and sports to Arts and crafts and Practical Competitions. SAYFC are very grateful to NFU Mutual Laurencekirk Branch who were main rally sponsors for the first time this year.

The recipients of the Caroline Rennie Commemorative Rose Bowl for a second consecutive year were Strichen JAC who were worthy winners after many successes throughout the day in every area of the rally with an impressive 106 points, a very close 2nd were Vale of Alford JAC with 104 points, in 3rd place were Udny JAC with 73 Points and in 4th New Deer YFC with 54 Points.

The Turriff JAC Perpetual Challenge Trophy for the best small club was also won by Strichen JAC, followed by New Deer YFC and Echt YFC.

The Stockjudging was the first competition to take place in the morning, judging three classes of cattle, with a welcome return of a dairy class, three sheep classes and a valuation class followed by reasons for the top placed competitors. The first placed team winning the North of Scotland Association of Junior Agricultural Clubs Cup for Stockjudging were Udny A with 1158 points (Murray Stuart, Craig Taylor and Kevin Bruce), second were Keith B with 1135 points (Abbie McGillivray, Lucy Shand and Ryan McConnachie) and joint third Strichen A and Vale of Alford A with 1099 points. The William Brown Cup for the best individual in the Stockjudging was jointly won by Brodie Keir, Vale of Alford A and Craig Taylor, Udny A with 405 points and in joint third place were Scott Elphinstone, New Deer A and James Lowe, Strichen A with 387 points. The best ladies individual was Lucy Shand, Keith B with 381, second, Abbie McGillivray, Keith B with 378 and in third place was Sally Mair, Turriff A with 371 points.

There was an impressive display of entries in the industrial section which gave the judges a challenging morning. While outside the Construction competition got under way with 15 teams making gates, along with 21 teams competing in junior, ladies and senior rope making with various other practical field events throughout the day. The sports competitions were held in the afternoon which included football, netball, running, relay race and obstacle race. Many club names appeared in the prize list proving the dedication and effort that club members put into in all areas of the Rally.

The day’s events concluded with the Tug of War which saw a fantastic number of teams competing, with 9 ladies and 12 gents teams. Results were Gents: 1st Mearns, 2nd Kinneff and 3rd Garioch while in the ladies section, 1st Strathbogie, 2nd Turriff and 3rd Lower Speyside.
