ย Young Farmers Cook up a Storm at Highland Country Cooks

SAYFC North Region held their Highland eliminations of the โ€˜Ready Steady Country Cooksโ€™ competition on Sunday 1st December at Tain Royal Academy. Which was kindly supported by Forbes Farm Fresh and judged by Gus Forbes (of Forbes Farm Fresh) and Paul Wilson.

Five teams competed for a place in the National Finals which is set to take place at the Competitions Weekend in February in Stirling. Teams were given one hour to cook dishes using a bag of 8 mystery ingredients. Within the list of ingredients was quality Steak mince, kindly provided by Forbes Farm Fresh, peppers and cheese. Without the aid of recipe books, teams had to create their very own meals in a โ€˜ready steady cookโ€™ style competition. Teams were judged on all aspects of their cookery skills, including hygiene, technical skill and team work as well as the balance, taste, and appearance of the dishes prepared.

Winners, Lyndsey Dunnet and Erin Mcguire of Halkirk Young Farmers created a premium steak mince burger served with smashed sweet potato fries followed by a delicious cake that caught the judge’s attention. Their Tidiness and methodical prep score is what helped secure them 1st place scoring 88 points out of a possible 100. Very closely followed by Forss sisters Chloe and Alana Ross who scored 87 with their onion bhaji’s being labelled some of the best the judges have tasted, In third place with 82 points was Abbie Mill and James Swanson. Erin Hewitson and Alyssa Gunn of Bower scored an impressive 69 points followed by Caitlin Coghill and Lexie Swanson who scored 61 points. From stuffed peppers to traditional Mince it was fantastic to see the different ideas and problem-solving the teams displayed on the day.

Our judges for the day, Gus Forbes and Paul Wilson praised all the teams for the excellent dishes they managed to create and were impressed with how well they worked together to make such a variety of tasty treats.
