30 Dec Kilmaurs Country Cooks
SAYFC West Region held their Highland eliminations of the ‘Ready Steady Country Cooks’ competition on Monday 16th December at Rosshall Academy. Which was kindly supported by Overton Farm Shop and judged by Jean Wilson and Hazel Watt.
Seven teams competed for a place in the National Finals which is set to take place at the Competitions Weekend in February in Stirling. Teams were given one hour to cook dishes using a bag of 8 mystery ingredients. Within the list of ingredients was quality Beef Steak, kindly provided by The Youngs at Overton Farm Shop, brussell sprouts and honey. Without the aid of recipe books, teams had to create their very own meals in a ‘ready steady cook’ style competition. Teams were judged on all aspects of their cookery skills, including hygiene, technical skill and team work as well as the balance, taste, and appearance of the dishes prepared.
Winners, Karen Shepherd and Rosie Wilson, of Kilmaurs Young Farmers created a delicious feast that caught the judge’s attention. Their Tidiness and methodical prep score is what helped secure them 1st place scoring 98 out of the possible 100! Very closely followed by East Kilbride sisters Emily and Kirsty Craig who scored 97. In third place with 95 points was Iain Shepherd and Sophie Simpson from Kilmaurs YFC too. From Butterbean Stew to Apricot Sponge it was fantastic to see the different ideas and problem-solving the teams displayed on the day.
Our judges for the day, Jean Wilson and Hazel Watt praised all the teams for the excellent dishes they managed to create and were impressed with how well they worked together to make such a variety of tasty treats.
Thank you to West Chair, Michael Rolfe who ran the competition like clock work and good luck to all the teams going on to the National Final in February.
